It has been a joyous and compelling journey, since I've learned stonecarving from my many mentors and friends, and from all the Marble/marblers, and from the ancient sculptors of history.
Generally, I carve in a contemporary, abstact style - almost always "direct carving", that is, without a maquette. I do feel that a communion with the stone is a primary consideration in my work...oftentimes the stone "talks" to me; and if I have a pre-formed idea of a piece, it comes from a quick sketch on paper and then drawing on the stone with crayon.
In addition to my quest for the perfect abstraction, I am drawn to ancient iconery: Greek Kore and sphinxes, Egyption power animals, Olmec and Toltec figures, gods, goddesses, dryads, Asian forms. I like to sculpt my interpretation of these mythical and mystical icons, as I feel that the old forms were imbued with supernatural powers, and a contemporary version may well be too. Aren't all forms on the material plane actually energy particles? When the medium is stone, metamorphed from the millenia, the stone itself tells the sculptor of its life, its birth, its power, its dreams.
I believe I was chosen to follow in the footsteps of the ancients: the Babylonians and Sumerians, the Easter Islanders, Mayans, Inuit, African, Oriental, Roman and Greek sculptors.
I work in Yule marble from Colorado, imported marbles and alabasters from around the world, limestone, bronze.
