"Sometimes out of despair, when we have given up, the stone itself sends a message - should one say, bit by bit - so that we may receive it.  Finally everything falls into place and emerges with a precision so remarkable it cannot be chance."
                                                                                                                       Isamu Noguchi

After abbreviated studies at various art schools around the US and Mexico, mainly studying photography, and working in a pottery studio in Santa Fe, travelling in Europe and North Aftrica for almost a year, and 1 year of being an apprentice to a metal sculptor in Aspen, Barry Petri, and 1 year of apprenticing to a well-known painter, David Rigsby, in Evergreen, Colorado,  I  moved to Santa Fe and ran my own small gallery on Canyon Road, for a time.

When I later  found stone carving, I knew it was something I would want to do endlessly.  My childhood memories of playing after school on a circle of monolithic white marble sculptures that are located at the Aspen Institute, in Aspen, have always resonated deeply with me.  But it's not just that.  As most stonecarvers will tell you:  the magic moment of the chisel meeting the stone sparks an intense  passion for stonecarving.  I am not exactly certain why stonecarving is so compelling - but one of my pet theories is that stonecarvers are chosen by the gods.  Noguchi had a fine way of explaining the magic.

My work reflects my fascination with ancient icons and powerful spirits.  The I Ching has inspired many of my pieces.  I am now moving more towards abstraction.
It's amazing that so many cultures, from Aztec to Eastern Islanders of the South Pacific, Inuit, Olmec, etc. have carved stone images.  I believe all these power figures have a supernatural energy - the sculptures were used to channel these energies - and to touch even a contemporary stone image of a power idol  transmits some of that supernatural energy to the soul.
Because I have attended many carving workshops throughout the past 10 years, I have been able to observe and learn from some of the world's master stonecarvers:  Uchida, Petros Dellatolas, Vasily Fedorouk, Rollie Granbois, Jesus Morales, Madeline Weiner.   Their inspiration has fueled my soul.

TO TOUCH A SMOOTH STONE SCULPTURE
IS TO FEEL ONE IS TOUCHING THE INFINITE.
METAMORPHED THROUGH THE MILLENIA,
STONES ARE SONNETS FROM THE EONS,
HAIKU FROM THE EARTH.
